Precautions for Vacuum Blood Tubes

Selecting and injecting sequence of vacuum blood tubes

Select the corresponding tube according to the item being tested, and inject the blood in the following order: culture bottle, ordinary tube, tube with solid anticoagulant, tube with liquid anticoagulant. This sequence aims to minimize the analysis error caused by specimen collection.

Blood distribution sequence

  • Using glass tube: blood culture tube, serum tube without anticoagulant, sodium citrate anticoagulant tube, other anticoagulant tubes.

  • Using plastic tube: blood culture tube (yellow), sodium citrate anticoagulant tube (blue), gel or non-gel-separator serum tube, gel or non-gel-separator heparin tube (green), EDTA anticoagulant tube (purple), glucose-decomposition inhibitor tube (grey).

Selection of vacuum blood tubes collection site and posture

Here, we will introduce you selection of vacuum blood tubes collection site and posture. For infants, blood can be taken from the thumb or the inner and outer edges of the heel according to the method recommended by the World Health Organization, and the cephalic vein or anterior fontanelle vein is preferred.

For adults, choose elbows, dorsal hand, wrist, etc. without congestion or edema, and occasionally, the vein is on the back of the elbow. Outpatients mostly use sitting position, while inpatients mostly use lying position. During blood collection, instruct the patient to relax, keep the environment warm, prevent vein contraction, avoid binding for too long, and forbid hitting the arm, which may cause local blood concentration or activation of the coagulation system.

Select the large and easy-to-fix blood vessels to ensure a prompt and accurate puncture. The puncture angle is generally between 20-30°. After blood reflux is observed, slightly advance in parallel, then attach the vacuum tube. For some patients with low blood pressure, blood does not reflux after the puncture, but flows out under negative pressure after the vacuum tube is in place. Strictly check vacuum blood tubes expiration date

It must be used within the expiration date and cannot be used if there are foreign objects or deposits in the tube.

Correctly stick the barcode to vacuum blood tubes

Print the barcode according to the medical order, stick it on the front after verification, and do not cover the calibration of the tube.

Timely send the vacuum blood tubes for inspection

The blood sample should be sent for inspection within 2 hours after collection to minimize the influencing factors. When sending, avoid strong light exposure, wind, rain, freezing, high temperature, shaking, and hemolysis.

Storage temperature of vacuum blood tubes

The storage temperature of the tube is 4-25°C. If the storage temperature is 0°C or below, it may cause the tube to rupture.

Vacuum blood tubes protection latex sheath

The latex sheath on the puncture needle can prevent blood from continuing to flow out and contaminating the surrounding area after the blood tube is removed, thus closing the blood collection and preventing environmental pollution. The latex sheath must not be removed. When collecting blood samples with multiple tubes, the rubber of the blood collection needle may be damaged. If it breaks and causes blood leakage, it needs to be adsorbed first and then disinfected.
